The Way Down

One of my favorite hikes is Half Dome in Yosemite. This view of the cables on the way down means a lot of things. It means that you have come a long way, you’ve seen the top, and you still have a good couple hours of downhill that will be harder than you think before you get home.

Utah Slope

I took this shot while skiing at Powder Mountain in Utah. Obviously there was some fresh snow to be had on this blue bird day!

Fiery Tree

I saw a sunset with some clouds and thought it was pretty good, but not great. Then I adding this dark and leafless tree in the foreground with some rough bark textures to offset the bright sky, and I liked the sunset a lot more!

Lake Michigan

Cold, blue, green, stormy and snowy are all ways to describe Lake Michigan on this day. I always liked the way the snow built up along the shore in the winter. The snow and ice still has beach under it, but soon it will be reaching out into the water and floating away in cold chunks. Even though the clouds on the horizon looked menacing, but they didn’t produce any of the snow that I was hoping for. They did however allow the lake to show off its many colors!

Birds on a Wire

There were a massive number of birds on these wires. Every once in awhile a group of them would fly away and come right back, almost as if they were shuffling for position. If the movie “The Birds” freaked you out, you probably wouldn’t have liked where I was standing to take this photo.

Three Palms

I’m going to do one more quick and dirty photo from the dreaded camera phone, and then I’ll get back to business. This one is from downtown Sacramento, and heavily processed by one of those ever so clever vintage apps. It works well for this one, giving the palms trees an old California feel and letting them stand out against a modern building in the background. Enjoy!

Fake Funnel Cloud

I came home to a computer that wouldn’t power on, so tonight I’m posting a photo I snapped with my phone from my office the other day. This type of cloud formation is from a plane passing through a cloud layer above, causing water to drop and disrupt the clouds below. I thought it looked like a mini funnel cloud, and my midwest background told me to take cover!

Fall Vineyard

A recent trip to Healdsburg made a great opportunity for some fall photography! This shot is from Ridge Vineyards. The view from their tasting room of their vines as they lost their leaves with the hills in the backgrounds had some great contrast. Early winter weather in the area had left some snow on nearby mountains, but these were low enough to not have any snow dusting.

Granite Chief

This is the view from the hike up Granite Chief at Squaw Valley. This isn’t the typical spot at the top where you would take in the view of what you will ski down, but I liked the way these trees were windblown on the backside. The whole image has a very cold and snowy feel to it. We have been getting some fantastic early snow here the last few days and I’ve been dreaming of skiing, so I had to post a snow pic!

Stuck in a Glass Box

Taken from the observation deck on the Sears (Willis) Tower in Chicago. These observations areas, which are essentially glass boxes, give you a view of the city in all directions including straight down!
