Lake Aloha

The hike to Lake Aloha is well worth it, especially if you take the water taxi across Echo Lake to cut off a few miles. This ended up being a 13 mile hike with a few extra detours. I took the extra trip up the loose rocks to get a good view of the whole lake and Pyramid Peak hanging on to some late summer snow.

Horizontal Lightning

I love taking photos when I travel, and my trip to the Midwest this year had some great opportunities to do just that! The sky seemed clear earlier in the evening, but later crazy lightning streaked almost sideways across the sky for at least 45 mins. The weather is just more exciting in the Midwest!

First Light at Cave Point

This wasn’t the shot I was going for but it was the shot that I got! I was playing around with my ND filter to smooth out the waves and make the lake look misty. I got a little bit of that effect, but ended up making the picture more about the sunstar I was able to capture shortly after sunrise. The smoother water also lets you see the rocks above and below the surface clearly.

All the Rocks

Pebble Beach on Washington Island has many rocks, but you can’t take any of them home! That would be against the rules. Instead I just enjoyed all the layers of color in the water.

Cold Enough for a Good Sunset

I expected it to be cold in Banff, but it was bitterly cold! This sunset was enough to convince us to go out onto the ice on Lake Louise to get some pictures, but the orange glow wasn’t enough to warm us up!

Green and Red and Blue

The greenish water to the red lighthouse to the blue sky made quite the rainbow of colors at the breakwater. It was very cold, and I was standing on a icy pier with water on each side of me, so I didn’t take long to get this shot and get back in the car!

Wintery Travel Plans

I’m already mentally scoping out photo spots for my trip to Wisconsin this Christmas. Until then, I’ll have to settle for editing this icy image from last year. The combination of the sunrise and the ice formations from the waves crashing at Cave Point almost made it feel like being on another planet.

Panoramic Seattle

They call it the Emerald City, but on this night the sky turned all of Seattle purple and blue just as the sun was disappearing! It took me quite a while to get this panorama shooting 19 individual frames handheld and working around window glare, and I really like how it turned out. A combination of good light and clouds like this makes up for all the times I’ve lugged my camera around and the weather didn’t cooperate.

Sundown at Donner Lake

Donner Lake, or as I like to call it Lake Tahoe’s more manageable little brother, is less crowded than Tahoe but can be just as scenic. The sun quickly pops over the mountains here before going out of sight. Fortunately for me I got some nice light through the clouds before the cold dark night really set in.

Star Trails in Door County

I spent a long time out in the dark to get this photo, but the good news is I had great company to make the time fly by! This isn’t the first time I’ve done star trails, but it is the first time I managed to get the North Star in the shot to make the movement look circular. In the end the wet feet and worrying about my camera ending up in the lake when I heard a big wave crash were all worth it.
