Taken moments before the lunar eclipse on 12/20/2010. This day happens to also be the winter solstice, the first time these two events have happened at the same time since 1638. While this photo is certainly not the best example of moon photography, I’m sure it was certainly better than what they had back then, which would have been to make a sketch.
I have a friend who has had problems with “the moon being in his face” while trying to sleep. I’m sure he had a few extra moments of peace tonight while the moon passed through the earth’s shadow!

Before turning down for the night, I set my alarm for 2:15 am, with the intention of seeing this historic event. I got out of bed at 2:30, pulled on boots, a heavy coat, hat, and gloves, and went downstairs to clean the snow off my car. I got in and drove to the lakefront, hoping I’d have a better chance of seeing it from the lake. NO DICE. The moon was totally invisible in Chicago, thanks to the clouds and fog. Soooo…I’m grateful for your picture!

Glad you both like it! There was some cloud cover here in california too, but it wasn’t constant and fortunately it was mostly clear when I took this. This was about the last I saw of the eclipse before more clouds rolled in.
