Rocky Mountain National Park earned its name on Fern Lake Trail, with lots of rough rocks every way that you look. We started our hike at Bear Lake, and after some good climbing the view opened up into this gorge with mountain peaks in all directions.

Pirates Cove
As you hike through these hills along the Pacific there are lots of ups and downs. This is one of the steeper ravines that you cross, known as Pirates Cove. The pirates seem to like this place and so do I!
Slug on a Stick
I found this banana slug just sliding around the floor of the redwood forest. He can’t really see, just detect light and movement, which might explain why he thought it was a good idea to go over this stick but ended up searching around in the air for his next move.
Into the Trees
I love trails like this. The brightly lit green of the trees almost makes it feel like you are walking through a tunnel in the forest.
The Hike Starts Before Dawn
To get to the bottom of the Grand Canyon and back up in one day, you should start well before dawn. This is near the top of the canyon, and you will take many more switchbacks like it before you get to the bottom.
Zion Isn’t Just for Rocks
It’s also for waterfalls! A short hike and a steady tripod was all that it took to get a shot of this little waterfall.
Rock Pocket
The Narrows in Zion is great place for a hike through the cold water. During a flood the rocks are lifted up and pushed into unique little pockets carved out of the wall. It almost looks like someone has carefully selected and stored each individual rock there.
Back to Summer
I recently said I was ready for winter, but then last weekend rolled around. I did a great hike and enjoyed one of the warmest beach days I’ve had in Northern California in a long time!
Moving Up The Narrows
Hiking up The Narrows in Zion requires getting wet. I’m normally looking for any excuse to get in the water with a tripod to get a shot of water like this flowing by, but for this hike it was required instead of optional.
Greenest of Green
It has been feeling a lot like an early summer recently, so what better way to celebrate than showing off this wall of intense green in Fern Canyon?!?
