Humpback Whales and Friends

I didn’t come here to watch whales, they showed up just like I did. I saw one come out of the water near Pacifica, and thought that might be the only one I saw. After a few minutes I realized there were at least four very close to shore and easy to see. They kept popping up to catch fish, which attracted a ton of birds to pick up the scraps. I could figure out where the whales were going next just by watching the birds.

Crazy Skies Over Clark Lake

Normally I’d worry that clouds like these meant a storm was coming. After a day of swimming and boating on the lake, I wasn’t concerned that this crazy sky would ruin the day as we’d already had our fun.

One Joshua Tree

As you drive into Joshua Tree, you see the namesake trees one by one. Then all of a sudden they are everywhere. I like this particular joshua tree, standing by itself and reaching toward the rocks in the distance.

Blue and Purple and Needle

From this angle the funky colors of the Experience Music Project Museum next to the Space Needle almost make it look like part of the sky is missing.

Sundown at Point Reyes

Point Reyes has many miles of beautiful seashore. The sunset only makes the view better. Walking out to the very tip of the peninsula was fun, and making our way back in the calm after sunset was very peaceful.

757 ft.

The San Francisco Bay as seen from 757 feet above sea level. Starting at Ayala Cove, first by bike and then by foot, I made my way to this point for a view of Tiburon and all that lies beyond. The view toward San Francisco was foggy, but this view toward Tiburon was very clear.

Manhattan Sunset

My original plan was to go to the top of Rockefeller Center to catch the sunset. Then it started raining, and then it started pouring. I was sure sunset was not going to happen. When the storm cleared right before sunset we were with our gracious hosts on Roosevelt Island and rushed to the roof. The sunset was super bright, and the leftover storm clouds were dramatic. Since it was just a few days past Manhattanhenge, where the direction of the sunset lines up with the corridors of the city, I was able to get the sun between two buildings right before it disappeared. Sometimes missed plans work out after all.

Coit Tower

I’m a fan of sunstars and like to incorporate them in a photo whenever I can. This time I was able to get Coit Tower reaching for the clouds and a sunstar shining down all at the same time! Success!

Betty Jane

Prior to Memorial Day I was at the Wings of Freedom Tour and saw some very nice old war planes. This shiny Mustang has seen a lot but still took to the skies with a lucky passenger shortly after I took this.

The Majestic Green Sea Turtle

In celebration of World Turtle Day, I went deep into my archives to find this friend. Diving with turtles is always amazing, and this particular one seemed particularly happy to pose on the bottom of the ocean while I took this photo. Long live the turtles!
